While the granules will be shed over time as the roof ages, certain factors can speed up the process. Branches on the surface of the roof can scratch away at the granules, and rotting leaves can loosen them spread moisture throughout the surface.
To prevent the premature granule shedding, remove the debris from the surface of your residential roofing system. Cleaning the roof isn’t much of a challenge, as most asphalt roofs are sloped to naturally shed debris. You just need to give those leaves and branches a push.
Remove Moss
Many roofs in the US develop what is commonly referred to as “black algae,” which is a type of moss. While this growth won’t harm the roof, it does leave unsightly black streaks across the surface that create an eyesore. You can remove roof algae on your own by mixing chlorine with water, but it’s safer if you have an experienced roofer do it for you.
Clean the Gutters
When gutters get clogged by leaves and twigs, rainwater can spill on the fascia and soffit boards. These are the two most vulnerable parts of the roof, and they can easily develop leaks and rot damage when the gutters continuously spill water on them. Make it a point to clean the gutters regularly. Not only do you safeguard the roof from water damage, you also prevent water from spilling on the exterior walls and foundation.
